Cork County defeat Laois in tight encounter

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Cork County continued their pre-season preparations with an away trip to Portlaois to take on Laois CC at the rugby grounds, who compete in Leinster League Division 3. It was Cork County’s first opportunity to take on some Leinster league opposition and would provide an early indicator of how their preparations have been going.

The home side won the toss and decided to bat on the artificial wicket. The opening exchanges were disrupted by two heavy showers however once they had past the fixture continued uninterrupted. James Duggan was making his first competitive debut for County following his winter sojourn in Wellington while playing for North City CC. Laois opener Masood was determined to take the attack to the County openers, James Duggan and Oliver Creedon, by striking some hefty blows down the ground. However he was soon dismissed by County main strike bowler Bruce Koch. Cork County spinners Andrew Saul and Tim Clifford provided a composed tight spell of bowling to drag the Laois run rate back. Zeeshan provided the mainstay of the Laois innings with a hard hitting 46 ably supported by his skipper Yasin with 29 to push the home side’s total to a competitive 202 for 8 wickets.

In reply Cork County openers, Ross Durity and Oliver Creedon, got off to a solid start dampening the early Laois bowling attack. However a sharp rising delivery from opener Asif struck Durity on the glove and eventually forced the vice captain to retire hurt with a suspected broken finger. Captain Robert Duggan replaced Durity at the crease and was soon followed by Bruce Koch after Creedon was dismissed by a sharp in swinging yorker from Asif. Koch and Duggan proceeded to consolidate the Cork County innings and soon began to push on with Koch in particular caressing some beautiful drives through the covers. Koch was dismissed caught behind by a little wobbler from Wilkie.

Young starlet Chris Banon joined Duggan at the crease and he soon took the attack to the Laois bowlers with some great shots off his legs and through the off side. Duggan and Banon were comfortably up with the required run rate and seemingly cruising to victory however when opener Asif was brought back into the attack he took the wicket of Banon with a sharp delivery which snuck through the defense of the young County batsman. That wicket restricted the County run rate pushing it up to almost 9 runs per over with 4 overs remaining. Captain Duggan took the initiative and went on the attack scoring boundaries straight down the ground and pulling a number of deliveries out of the ground. When Andrew Saul was dismissed and replaced by Cian Scannell the Mardyke side only required 3 runs from 2 overs which was provided by 4 wides from M. Auret.

Sunday 25th April, 40 Over match at Portlaois RFC:
Laois CC 202-8 (Zeeshan 46, Koch 2-17, M Reed 2-9)
Cork County CC 203-5 (Duggan 72*, Banon 48, Asif 2-31)

Cork County won by 5 wickets scorecard

Positive start to Cork County’s pre-season

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Cork County got their 2010 pre-season preparations off to a positive start with two highly competitive fixtures against Baxenden CC, who ply their trade in the Lancashire league. Saturday’s 40 over match saw the Lancashire side put County into bat and the rustiness in the County top order showed with the loss of the top three batsmen for just 10 runs. However the ever dependable Matt Reed ably supported by Oliver Creedon steadied the ship guided the home side to a respectable score with a quick fire 30 from new West Indian recruit Andrew Saul. Cork County finished their innings on 117 for 5 after the allotted 40 overs. Baxenden’s reply got off to a stuttering start with the loss of two early wickets due to an excellent spell of bowling from County opener Parvez Ali. Baxenden skipper Rishton (38) guided the Lancashire side to a five wicket victory with good support from Sudworth (39 not out). On his debut Andrew Saul finished with impressive figures of 1-19 off 5.2.

Sunday’s match was a 20Twenty affair with the Lancashire side deciding to bat first in the warm mid afternoon conditions. The Baxenden innings struggled to get going with a great opening spell of bowling from Bruce Koch and Parvez Ali restricting the English side’s top order. Baxenden’s middle order batsman Craushaw made an impressive 49 before being bowled by Koch to guide the touring side to a reasonable total of 119. In reply Cork County lost Andrew Saul in the second over however opener Des O’Leary (46 not out) and young starlet Chris Banon (31) provided a steady base to the home side’s innings. After Banon’s dismissal Bruce Koch (27 not out) took up the reins and guided County to a well deserved eight wicket victory.

Saturday April 10th at the Mardyke:
Cork County 117-5 lost to Baxenden 120-5 by 5 wickets.

Sunday April 11th at the Mardyke:
Cork County 121-2 beat Baxenden 119 all out by 8 wickets

Scorecards are available on the Fixtures and Results page.

Munster 2010 League Fixtures announced

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

The Munster Cricket Union have announced the league fixtures for the 2010 season. A full list of fixtures for each of the Cork County sides can be viewed on the Results/Fixtures page.

Division One kicks off on May 1st when new comers Limerick Raiders are thrown straight into league action with an away match to Midleton, although they will have home team privileges due to their lack of a home venue.

The league begins in earnest on May 3rd with a mouth-watering encounter between heavy-weights Cork County and Cork Harlequins. Although this clash is so early in the season, it could go a long way towards deciding the destination of the trophy come September. This will be Cork County’s first competitive match of the season before they head to Belfast to take on Civil Service NI at Stromont in the First Round of the Bobb Kerr Irish Senior Cup on the 8th May.

Waterford IT don’t begin their campaign until May 15th when they make the trip to Midleton College. The Waterford side will already have a competitive match under their belt as they take on UCC in the 2010 intervarsity tournament on April 17th.

In Division Two, six teams are in action on the opening day. Cork County 2 face a trip to O’Dowd Park to take on Kerry, who will be keen to assert themselves on the new Division Two. With the league reverting back to three divisions this year, after a season with two, Kerry along with Lismore, Clonmel, Galway, UCC and the ‘Quins and County second sides have made the drop down to the second tier.

Clonmel travel to Farmers Cross for their opening game to take on Cork Harlequins 2. Last season was one to forget for the boys from the Premier County as they finished bottom of Division One with only 36 points to their name. However, they will be confident of securing a lot of points at home this season as ‘The Convent’ is a notoriously difficult place for visiting teams to get a result.

Galway are faced with the prospect of a long journey to the South East to take on Lismore at Castle Farm. Lismore had an indifferent season last year, finishing fourth from the bottom of Division One. Their visitors, on the other hand, finished an unprecedented 3rd in that league and will be hopeful they can carry that form into this season.

League favourites Co. Clare have to wait until May 8th to get their campaign underway when they take on Galway in Lydican. Co. Clare ran away with last year’s Division Two, finishing with 166 points and will no doubt be going all out to retain their title.

May 2nd sees the beginning of Munster Division Three. The first tie is a local derby between at the Farm between UCC and Cork County 3. Waterford District will take their Munster Cricket League bow on the opening day when they take on Kerry 2 at O’Dowd Park. This will be a very welcome sight as Waterford, once a cricket stronghold, has been without a non-college cricket team for a number of years.

Cork Harlequins 3 are in action the next day when they welcome a Limerick side who find themselves in the unfamiliar surroundings of Division Three. The 2005 Division One champions decided to drop down to the lower leagues in order to go through a rebuilding process after an unsuccessful period. On the same day, Cork County 4 travel to Castle Park to take on Lismore 2. Midleton 2 welcome Cork County 4 on May 8th.
