County’s Division 1 clash with Harlequins postponed in bizarre circumstances

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Cork County were due to take on Cork Harlequins at Farmers Cross in a Division 1 top of the table clash this upcoming Sunday the 4th of July. However in bizarre circumstances Cork Harlequins have appealed to the MCU to have the match postponed under the guise that their groundsman apparently needs time to prepare wickets for the upcoming U-13 Interprovincials. Cork County immediately rejected such a proposal as Division 1 League cricket should always have precedence especially for such an important potential league deciding match. However, unsurprisingly the MCU committee succumbed to pressure from the Farmers Cross outfit and have agreed to postpone the fixture.

Just to note, the Mardyke will also be playing host to three U-13 interprovincial matches that week and will in addition be hosting a charity 6-a-side tournament this Saturday and a Division 3 League fixture on Sunday the 4th. Supporters should also note that Phoenix CC have a Leinster League Division 2 fixture this coming Sunday which ironically would have coincided with the County v Harlequins fixture.

County suffer second surprise defeat in Division 1

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Cork County suffered their second successive defeat in Division 1 after they went down to the league’s bottom side Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT). The defeat follows on from their narrow loss at the Mardyke to Limerick Raiders the previous weekend which opens up the Division 1 title chase. County were without this season’s star man Bruce Koch, experienced seamer Keith Banks and both Ross Durity and Andrew Saul due to unavailability. It was Cork County’s first visit to the Waterford venue which didn’t appear to be up to senior standard lacking some basic facilities and cricket equipment.

County skipper Robert Duggan won the toss and decided to bowl hoping to dismiss the Waterford side for a low total. James Duggan took the early Haq Nawaz and he was soon followed by Naveed. County took wickets at regular intervals with Andrew Wootton finishing with figures of 2-34 off 10 and Noelie Cronin with 2-39 off 6. However some poor bowling by the others in the County attack allowed WIT to creep towards 250 with Nasir Mohammed (46) and Sunil Sherawat (51) being the principal run makers in the WIT lineup.
Cork County’s reply got off to a swift start with Andrew Wootton striking some typically big bowls off his legs and down the ground but yet again his innings came to a premature end when he was trapped LBW by Haq Nawaz. Des O’Leary on his return to the first XI opened the batting and showed great patience and composure early on as he work the ball well off his legs and down the ground. Robert Duggan joined O’Leary at the crease after Wootton’s departure and the two consolidated the innings well and dampened the early Waterford enthusiasm. Seemingly in total control and set for a big score O’Leary decided to play a lofted drive down the ground straight into the hands of long-off for 22 runs. In form batsman Chris Banon, having scored 101 not out for the 2nd XI against Harlequins the previous day, entered the fray and took his time to get accustomed to the quite bouncy artificial. With Cork County on 154-2 and on course for hard fought victory, Duggan was dubiously adjudged LBW by umpire Ger O’Sullivan following a defensive shot against Hussain having made a large stride down the wicket. Duggan’s departure was swiftly followed by middle order batsmen Michael John Wycherley, Darren Fogarty and Mirza Baig all of whom were bowled by off-break bowler Hari Ramshetty. This mid order collapse put huge pressure on young starlet Banon who attempted to take most of the strike in order to push County towards victory. However as Banon continued to lose partners with Parvez Ali was also dubiously adjudged LBW, he attempted loft a shot over cover-point but mistimed it directly into the fielders hands. With Banon’s departure County’s hopes of victory fizzled out also and tail-ender James Duggan was the final man to be dismissed condemning the Mardyke side to a surprise defeat and second in as many weeks.

Cork County remain top of Division 1 following Cork Harlequins surprise 5 wicket defeat to Midleton at Midleton College, leaving the Farmers Cross side 9 points adrift of County. The two sides were due to face each other this coming weekend at Farmers Cross but the fixture has been bizarrely postponed without justifiable explanation. Just to note that on the same day Phoenix CC will be competing in the Leinster league Division 2.

Cork County into Senior Cup semi-final after thriller in Galway

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Division 1 league cricket took a backseat as Cork County turned their attention to regaining the Munster Senior Cup after the huge disappointment of crashing out at the quarter final stage to Galway last season. As luck would have it the draw for this season’s competition pit the two clubs against each other once again, on this occasion County had to make the long trip to Lydican in Galway. County were determined not to underestimate the Tribesmen after last season’s disappointment and brought a strong side up for the Senior Cup quarter final tie. Cork County were without West Indian all-rounder Andrew Saul and off-spinner Ciarán Healy but welcomed back skipper Robert Duggan after he missed last weekend’s match at home to WIT.

After arriving at the picturesque Lydican ground in Oranmore on the outskirts of Galway City the start of the match was delayed due to a heavy shower, however, once it had cleared Cork County skipper Duggan won the toss and decided to bowl. County opener James Duggan appeared a bit stiff after the long trip and took one or two over’s to settle into his rhythm while Parvez Ali bowled with his usual probing line and length without much luck. Duggan some found his line and length removing opener Bindal and number four batsman Speldewinde. Andrew Wootton replaced Parvez Ali from the clubhouse end and soon bowled opener Shane O’Malley with a ball which beat his outside edge and knocking over off stump. Some excellent ground fielding by vice captain Ross Durity led to the run out of number three batsman Vishal. At this stage, Cork County appeared in control with the Galway batsmen unable to build any meaningful partnerships. Number five batsman Imran had other ideas and immediately from ball one was intent on taking the attack to the County bowlers, taking a particular liking to all-rounder Bruce Koch’s bowling smashing one or two back over the South African’s head for 6. However, after taking one or two risk’s too many Imran was undone by the medium pace of Andrew Wootton as he skied one to Robert Duggan at extra-cover.

After Imran’s removal Danesh Ali joined Waqqas at the crease and both batsmen appeared intent on building a big partnership to push the Galway total towards a defendable target. Co. Galway’s star player Waqqas, in particular, batted with great control and power striking some great shots down the ground and off his legs. He was ably supported by Danesh Ali who intelligently got his partner on strike as often as possible. Cork County sought to take the pace off the ball with the introduction of medium pacer Matt Reed and the ploy appeared to work when he trapped Waqqas LBW for 51 runs. The removal of Waqqas injected some zip into the County step as Galway skipper Umair was run out by Koch at backward point for just 2 and he was soon followed by Ted Turton who was caught with a great effort from Andrew Wootton at first slip off the bowling of Reed. Danesh Ali had to take up the mantle of taking the attack to the County bowlers however he was soon bowled by Reed for a well earned 36 runs. Tail-ender Mahon was bowled by Koch leaving Co. Galway with a very competitive total of 201 for the Mardyke side to chase.

The Cork County reply appeared to get off to a promising start with opener Andrew Wootton (11 runs) playing some lovely shots through the covers and off his legs, however; once again he holed out to extra-cover from a ball from Waqqas. Wootton was replaced by captain, Robert Duggan, whose poor form with the bat continued when he was bowled third ball by Waqqas for 0. This signalled the start of an inspired spell of bowling from Galway opener Waqqas as he accounted for a mini collapse by the Cork County top order as Duggan’s departure was soon followed by opener Mirza Baig (8) and both the middle order batsmen Chris Banon (0) and Matt Reed (0); Galway could sense their place in the semi finals was edging closer. With County’s future participation in the 2010 Munster Senior Cup teetering on the verge elimination at 32 for 5, Michael John Wycherley joined in form batsman Bruce Koch at the crease. Koch had made a composed start to his innings, not taking too many risks while keeping the County scoreboard ticking over. Wycherley sensibly assessed the situation and as soon as he got his eye in he looked to take the attack to the Galway bowlers with some calculated blows to all sides of the wicket and in particular through the off-side.

As the partnership developed rapidly the enthusiasm of the Galway bowlers and fielders visibly dropped as Koch got into his stride with some beautifully timed shots through the covers and down the ground. Wycherley’s innings was an inspired and game changing one with the highlights two huge sixes; one over deep square leg and the other over long-off. Koch and Wycherley put on a 100 runs together and the mood in the Cork County team was transformed with thoughts of victory coming to the fore. With Wycherley seemingly in total control he was squared up by a delivery from the opener Danesh Ali, who had returned to finish his spell, and was caught behind for an inspired 45. Wycherley was replaced by Parvez Ali at the crease and he aimed to get Koch on strike as often as possible however he soon followed Wycherley after being bowled by Danesh Ali.

Vice Captain Ross Durity, who is returning to the side after recovering from a broken thumb, joined Koch at the crease with the score on 136 for 7; Cork County still requiring 66 for victory. Durity’s experience was crucial to deal with the pressurised run chase and to build a match winning partnership with Koch. Despite lacking match practise Durity ably worked the ball around to keep the scoreboard ticking over and also trying to get the free scoring Koch on strike. It was clear that Koch would have to bat through the innings if County were to progress into the semi-final. Koch and Durity used all their experience to keep chipping away at the required total while the Galway’s confidence seemed to wane as the Mardyke side edged towards an unlikely victory. At the end of the 43rd over County were suddenly within grasp of victory as Durity played a beautifully timed drive through the covers for 4. The sides were level and County only required one run for victory and with Koch on 96 not out it was set up for him to make his century while clinching victory for County. With Koch on strike at the start of the 44th over and the first ball from Galway skipper Umair in the slot he smashed the ball back over the bowlers head for 6 leading to huge celebrations by the rest of his Cork County teammates. Reaching his century and also clinching victory from the jaws of defeat for his side was an immense effort from the South African all-rounder and he rightly received the adulation of his teammates. Cork County now move on into the semi final of the Munster Senior Cup and face either Midleton at the Mardyke on the 2nd of August.

Mardyke is Mainstay of Cork cricket life

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

There is quite a bit of evidence to suggest that cricket originated in France. We know that the first international was played in the USA between the home side and England. Back in those days of the early 1800’s the game was only beginning to find its feet both in Britain and the colonies.

The Gaelic Athletic Association wasn’t even a conception at that period and, because the eternal battle between bat and ball was the only challenge offered to the Irish youth, cricket flourished throughout the country in the initial stages.

It became very popular with the general populace in virtually all counties, particularly Tipperary. It has strong roots in the Ireland of today. The Mardyke in Cork, with its fascinating location and picturesque setting has been, for very many years, the acclaimed venue, the cathedral of cricket, in this land. It is nature’s gift to cricket and to the city.

The Dyke has suffered her agonies down through the decades. At one stage there was considerable pessimism that she would even pull through to see another dawn. That, happily, turned out to be totally misplaced. In fact, a bright, buoyant and successful future is now seen as an inevitability. All the signs are in place. A burgeoning youth policy has produced a progressive team policy where, in fact, most of the Cork County teams, from minor to senior, are top of their respective Munster leagues. The senior squad’s ambitions in the powerful Leinster league have, so far, been vindicated and the club captain Robert Duggan has led the side with elan and drive.

But the edifice, the pavilion that supports all these activities, is now Cork County’s pride and joy. For a time it had a miserable existence and only the members’ fortitude kept it alive. Bit the building was often sick and said to be in terminal decline.

Five years ago, the members, supporters and the business fraternity of the city rallied to her aid and a first class restoration programme was completed. The tsunami that prostrated parts of Cork in November last included the famous grounds. The floods left the officers, Kieran Aherne (president), honorary secretary Donal Donovan and honorary treasurer David Griffin in a dilemma of mind boggling proportions.

But, again, though dismayed, they were successful in finding a solution. They formed a steering committee – David Griffin, Shay Livingstone and John Power – to be in total charge of the renovation and restoration work which went on over a six month period.

Now, the new Lady of the Mardyke is ready for unveiling in all her glory and in all her majesty. She is a fir queen for any consort. The new bar area has been remodelled, refurbished and refreshed and, just now, the Long Room, incorporating the old and historic Pavilion; the new dressing rooms, shower and toilet areas have all received a thorough make-over that would great rejoicing to the proprietor of any five star hotels. All this and heaven, too, luxuriating in the quaint, somnolent setting of the famous cricket grounds.

The programme, at first, was supervised on site by Stephen Hickey and, then, by Matt Reed who carried it through to its glorious conclusion. These, and the driving force of the steering committee of Power, Liviningstone and Griffin, a trio of dedicated and resourceful people, saw the good ship Mardyke to a safe anchorage.

What was achieved, this time, will never be attempted again. The dream and the wish have been fulfilled and the club, free from construction worries can happily sit back on their laurels.

Division 1 match with WIT abandoned in unusual circumstances

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

Cork County’s Division 1 fixture with WIT at the Mardyke last Sunday had to be abandoned in unusual circumstances after the motorised heavy roller broke down on the wicket while it was being rolled between innings. After WIT batted first and were bowled out for 143 the Cork County stand in captain Ross Durity requested that the pitch be rolled between innings however the machine seized up just off the wicket after blowing a starter motor thus preventing any further play for the day forcing the umpires to abandon the fixture. The match will be refixed for later in the season.
