Friday, July 9th, 2010

The following is a press release from the Munster Cricket Union:

Another significant milestone for Munster cricket development is reached on Friday July 9th as an U-17 Munster XI travels to Co. Kildare to take on a combined U-17 Bagenalstown/Halverstown team in Munster’s opening match of the 2010 LCU U-17 League. The side will be captained by Cork County’s rising star Chris Banon (pictured).

“This is an exciting prospect for our U-17 squad”, said James Doran, Cricket Ireland Development Officer for Munster today.“We have an experienced and talented group of players ranging in age from 13 to 17 who will benefit hugely from these opportunities to compete against their peers in Leinster”.

Doran went on to say that, “The credit for this initiative must go to Cork County’s Dermot Giltinan who made the initial approach to the LCU and Dermot joins me in expressing Munster’s appreciation of the very positive support given to this proposal by Maureen Joyce of Merrion CC and Clontarf CC’s Brian O’Sullivan”.

“The teams for our six match campaign will be selected from a panel of around 18 or so of our up and coming youth players with the selectors’ aiming to balance competitiveness with providing as many players as possible with match experience at this level.

Doran concluded by noting that the selectors would be keeping an open mind on the possibility of adding further players to the squad announced today with the performances of other younger players in the province being closely monitored as the season progressed.

The U-17 team coaching and managerial responsibilities will be shared by James Doran, Cricket Ireland Munster CDO, Ted Williamson, MCU Director of Youth Coaching, Ross Durity of Cork County CC and John Noone of Midleton CC with Cork County’s Dermot Giltinan joining the above-named for team selection duties.

Cork County Charity 6’s Tournament only days away

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

Following on from last year’s hugely successful event, the cricket grounds at the Mardyke will be playing host to the annual Cork County Charity 6’s Tournament on Saturday. The nominated charity for this year’s event is the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind and it is hoped to build the tournament into the cricket equivalent of the Heineken Kinsale Sevens in the coming years. Despite the poor weather last summer, the event drew teams from varying backgrounds to the Mardyke to compete for the 6-a-side title. Teams varied from a Munster rugby side to a team from Kilbrittain GAA Club who eventually went on to win the competition. This year’s event has drawn interest from around the country and also from as far afield as Australia and the UK. William John Bradley and Shay Livingstone from the Cork County Cricket Club committee have been the driving force behind the Charity 6’s Tournament and have sought to increase the profile of the event following the success of last year’s competition and have been encouraged by the interest shown from home and abroad.

The Charity 6’s Tournament is scheduled to take place on Saturday the 3rd July and the weekend will kick off with a BBQ for teams and supporters on Friday night at the Mardyke. The tournament will commence in earnest at 10:30 a.m. on the Saturday and will continue into the afternoon. As with last year’s event teams are encouraged to play in fancy dress/team kits and it is anticipated that a few ‘Eoin Morgan’ style cricket shots will be on show. Entry forms will be available on Saturday morning prior to the commencement of the tournament so don’t delay if you still wish to enter a side. There will be food and drinks available all day so all are welcome to attend even those who are not competing.

Pictures from last year’s event are available in the gallery section of the website.
