Weekend Review: 13th & 14th May

Irish Senior Cup

It was that time of the year again when the 1st Round of the Irish Senior Cup took centre stage and Cork County made the longest trip to face North West side Bready at Mason Road near Derry. A weakened squad due to injuries, suspensions and unavailability made the 800km trip to the North West.

In a rain affected game Bready reached 264-8 in their 46 overs. Bready overseas professional Samarasooriya was their top scorer with 81 with Gary Kings taking 4-55 for County.

In reply, Cork County reached 30-0 after 9 overs with Durity and Coleman well set at the crease before the rain set in and a further reduction set the away side a DLS target of 206 in 32 overs. Unfortunately, once the batsmen resumed their innings the wicket had quickened up and the skiddy conditions made the run chase all that more difficult. In Cork County’ 149-7 from their 32 overs, Stephan Grobler scored 35 and young Diarmuid Carey finished on 20* leaving Bready 56 run (DLS) winners.

Bready 267-8 (Samarsooriya 81, Rankin 35, King 4-55) beat Cork County 132-7 (Grobler 35, Carey 20*, Barr 3-35) by 62 runs on D/L at Mason Road.

Munster Division 2

Cork County III made it two wins from two with a hard fought victory over North Kerry at the Mardyke. Openers Abdul Jabbar Younus (86) and Paul McDowell (97*) led the way with an excellent opening partnership to set the visitors a target of 262 to win. Sajid Khan did the damage for County taking 3-19 as North Kerry were reduced to 200-8 off their 40 overs.

Cork County 261-3 (McDowell 97*, A.J.Younus 86) beat North Kerry 200-8 (Packet 56, S Khan 3-29) by 61 runs at the Mardyke.
