Welcome to our ‘Best of 2022’ countdown! Each year, we reflect on the amazing moments and achievements of the past season. As we count down from number 10 to the top spot, relive the most memorable moments of 2022.
#10 – To kick off our look back on 2022, the completion of the net bay construction is certainly a big highlight from the year and has proved to be a huge asset to the club and our members.
#9 – A colourful return to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade after a two year gap with a large and energised turnout from the youth section. It was great to see cricket on the streets of #Cork with the Lord Mayor also joining in!
#8 – Acknowledging some of the wonderful individual and team performances throughout the season. Too many to choose from — nail-biting match winners, 5 wicket hauls, 50s, 100s… Well done to everyone!
#7 – A wonderful finale to the season for the youth section with recognition of achievements at all levels with the U13s and U15s collecting their Munster trophies and medals. A fitting way to celebrate a successful season!
#6 – A first Division 3 title for Bilal Ahsan and his 4th XI squad was just reward following a challenging league campaign. Congrats to Bilal and the whole squad on a terrific effort throughout the highs & lows of the season!
#5 – The club competed in two All- Ireland Youth Semi-Finals, a first for any Munster club side. Though both results didn’t go our way, the boys and girls on both sides can be proud of their achievements. Well done to all involved!
#4 – Once again the Mardyke was looking pristine with some excellent wickets produced throughout the summer. Matt, Francois and the team helped maintain the very high standards that are often taken for granted at the Mardyke.
#3 – A first Division 1 title since 2010 ended a long wait for the club with 10 wins, 2 defeats and 2 No results ensuring the 2nd XI finished top of the pile. Well done to Rob Duggan and the squad for their efforts throughout the campaign.
#2 – A huge shout out to all of the hard work and organisation of the volunteers and coaches who helped make each of the youth levels function so well from the beginners at ‘Give It A Bash’ and the Softball Academy right up to the U17s.
#1 – Number 1 in our countdown has to be the wonderful memorial match in honour of the late, great Dermot Giltinan. For many, it was a chance to remember the great man and pay tribute to his legacy in the game of cricket in Cork and beyond.
Cormac Hassett was named the Noel Malloy Player of the Year at the 2022 Annual Awards Dinner at the Mardyke last Friday, 25th November.
The keeper/batsman had an impressive season with the bat and gloves and had already been awarded the Satchwell Cup for the best wicketkeeper in the Leinster Championship and the 1st XI Batsman of the Year. Cormac amassed 364 runs at an average of 33 in the Championship and averaged an impressive 41 in the Munster Premier T20 competition. He also was capped at Munster Reds level once again.
The evening also saw awards presented at 2nd, 3rd and 4th XI levels and was preceded by the Youth section so it proved to be a very well attended and enjoyable night.
Nabeel Anjum took home the O’Donnell Bowler of the Year award following an excellent season with the ball in all competitions. Nabeel took 17 wickets at an average of 27.8 in the Leinster Championship and 11 wickets at 17.9 in the Munster Premier Division.
There were also two special presentations made on the night to recognise achievements both on and off the field. Firstly, Ross Durity was recognised for having played over a hundred fixtures (119) for the club in Cricket Leinster competitions, joining Robert Duggan in the century club with still a few seasons left in the tank!
Club stalwart David Griffin was also acknowledged for his year as Cricket Ireland President during which time he has overseen Ireland’s recent successes at the T20 World Cup and the full return of cricketing activity following the Covid pandemic. David is the latest President of Cricket Ireland to originate from Cork County following on from Pat Dineen back in 1987.

Plenty of members put in colossal effort throughout a long season and the annual dinner is always a great occasion to get together and look back on the highs and lows, especially the successes at all levels.
The U13s and U15s both won their respective league campaigns and reached the All-Ireland Semi-Finals making them the first Munster sides to do so in those age groups. The 2nd and 4th XI were crowned champions of their respective divisions while the 3rd XI clinched the Division 2 T20 title.
The club will be hosting a memorial service for the late, great Dermot Giltinan which will take place at the cricket grounds at Mardyke on Saturday, 9th April 2022.
The service, which will be led by Brother Martin of the Presentation Brothers, will allow many of his cricketing friends and clubmates to remember the great man and pay tribute to his lasting legacy at the Mardyke which was his second home.
Proceedings will commence at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday, 9th April, so we very much look forward to seeing you from 2 p.m. on the day.

A huge thanks to Nick Tulloch and all of his assistants on the Youth Committee who represented the club with aplomb during the St. Patrick’s Day parade a few weeks ago.
After a two year break due to Covid, the club were once again participating and joined almost 2,500 others with plenty of colour, music and pageantry on show. The cricketers joined other Cork sporting clubs such as the hurlers and footballers from St Finbarrs and Nemo Rangers.
From the main stand, they received a standing ovation from the City’s councillors and management led by Lord Mayor Colm Kelleher and the Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney.
Great to see a big turnout and added exposure for the club and the game of cricket in Cork.
Cork County’s first and hopefully last virtual Awards Night take place on Friday, 30th April, as the club looked back on an eventful and challenging 2020 season that has been condensed due to the Covid health emergency resulting in a T20 only format across all levels of the game.
As the club was unable to celebrate the achievements and impact of members under more normal circumstances at an end of season dinner due to government restrictions, it was better late than never to have a look back as we prepare to look forward to the 2021 season.

Seeing as the club wasn’t able to host the 2020 Annual Awards Night due to the restrictions that have been in place since the end of last season, we will be naming the various award winners from U11s right up to the Club Player of the Year.
With the youth section recommencing training the week after then there is no better time to acknowledge the effects of players, teams and volunteers from a condensed 2020 season.

With the proceeds going towards a worthwhile cause and some fantastic prizes up for grabs, then anticipation was high ahead of the big draw.
MC on the night Andy Wootton was ably assisted by Talha Kayani, Kevin O’Sullivan and Abdul Jabbar Younus who took care of proceedings to announce the various winners of the raffle. The winners were selected by using an online number randomizer to void any suggestions of impropriety or Russian interference! 🙂

A huge thanks to all involved in organising and taking part in the quiz. Our original target of €1,500 was smashed with the club raising € 2,705 towards the construction of two permanent net bays in the southeastern corner of the grounds with work due to start in the spring once the ground dries up.
