Monday, September 9th, 2019

Cork County completed an impressive Senior treble following confirmation that they retained the Premier Division title on Sunday.

A century for Cormac Hassett and a five-wicket haul from Abubakar Saddique helped Cork County to a 206-run win against County Kerry in the Senior Cup Final.

An opening stand of 130 between centurion Hassett and Brandon Kruger laid the perfect platform for Cork to post a daunting total. Hassett top scored with 103, while Kruger hit 55.

The middle order kept the momentum going as Jeremy Benton made 48, Robert Duggan 33, and Zubair Shah an unbeaten 31 in their total of 363 for 6.

Kerry were never in the chase with only Qassim’s 39 the major resistance as they made 157.

Abubabkar Saddique claimed 5 for 15, Nabeel Anjum 2-30, while a special word of praise for teenage spinner Diarmuid Carey who probably deserved better than his 1-28 off 10 overs.

“I’m absolutely delighted with the win in the cup final and for me personally to contribute with a century is a huge bonus,” said centurion Cormac Hassett.

“My opening partnership of 130 with Brandon Kruger really set the tone for the day and I aimed to take the attack to the Kerry bowlers from the off.

“The middle order really backed us up to help put on a big total and the bowlers were excellent to deny Kerry any room to get going.

“All in all a great overall team performance.”

County clinch 6th consecutive Premier Division title

Monday, September 3rd, 2018

Cork County clinched their 6th consecutive All Rounder Cricket Premier Division title with a game still to play following victory over Limerick at Adare on Saturday.

The Mardyke men knew that avoiding defeat against Limerick would mean they could not be caught at the top of the Premier Division table with the final game of the season still to play.

A dominant display with the ball in batsmen friendly conditions on the Adare artificial saw Cork County restrict the home side to just 120. The pick of the bowlers were Abubakar Saddique (3-7), Joseph George (3-11) and Munster Reds skipper Jeremy Benton (3-25).

The reply go off to a shaky start with the loss of 3 early wickets but an excellent partnership between Saddique (43*) and opener Harry Broadhurst (35*) saw the visitors home with 6 wickets to spare.

The skipper Cormac Hassett was clearly delighted to have clinched the title with a game still to play following an impressive season in which they lost just one fixture to date.

“The boys have put in a huge effort once again this season. Competing in two league competitions is always a tough ask but the squad have really stuck at it and suffering just one defeat in the Premier Division all season is a fantastic return for all the hard work!”

“A sixth league title in succession is a fantastic achievement and shows the commitment of the players and club to maintaining our success in Munster.  In addition to our Senior T20 Blast title, it has been a good season despite missing out on a possible Senior Cup due to a bowl-out earlier in the season!”

County cruise to Munster Senior Cup Final victory

Saturday, September 5th, 2015

Cork County swept County Kerry aside to clinch the 2015 Munster Senior Cup in the refixed match at the Mardyke. The victory is their 4th Senior Cup in the last six years and helped make up for their unfortunate elimination in last season’s competition.

Bowling first the Leesiders were soon on top with openers Andy Wootton (5-20) and Junaid Amin (2-16) turning the screw on the Kerry top order who were soon on 21-5.

Wicket keeper Uddin was the only Kerryman to make it into double figures as the rest of the batting order failed to establish any partnerships and were eventually bowled out for just 60.

In response, Kerry made early inroads by taking the wickets of openers Russell and Durity but Hassett (31*) and Grobler (16*) steadied the ship and saw Cork County home with 8 wickets to spare.
