Leinster Division 2 Review: Cork County win last 9 to grab title

Thursday, December 1st, 2016

Cork County 1- Champions (Predicted 4th)

  • • Batting Rating: 120
  • • Bowling Rating: 122
  • • RpO for: 4.64
  • • RpO against: 4.27

By mid-June, Cork County 1 were in spot of bother after losing to Dublin University, Leinster and Malahide in their first four matches. There was only one way they could win the league after that start, and that was by winning their remaining nine matches – a task that was achieved in an amazing late season run. It was Cork County’s second league title in Leinster, to go with their 2013 Division 3 crown.

Most of the games on that run in were healthy victories, although the nerves must have been frayed on the last game of all, when chasing 135 against Balbriggan, County found themselves at 119-7 and 128-8, with only Ross Durity standing up to the Balbriggan bowlers. Tom Clifford and Muhammad Junaid Amin got the required eight runs, and then there was a short wait to see if Leinster could win their last game against Terenure – they couldn’t.

Four players passed 200 league runs for the season, Cormac Hassett had a supporting role with 213 runs at 19.36, Ross Durity a very decent 271 runs at 30.11, Morne Bauer a very decent indeed 289 runs at 57.8 and Stephan Grobler 423 runs at 42.3. Five bowlers got into double wickets in the league, with Morne Bauer (12 at 23.08), Ahmed Billal Bhatti (12 at 25) and Muhammad Junaid Amin (12 at 25.42).

Two bowlers dominated though. Aaron Cawley has a major breakthrough season with 23 wickets at 15.61, with his skipper breaking a record held by two Leinster players – Joe Carroll and Corey Edwards. Stephan Grobler took 31 wickets at 11.23, the previous record being 30 in a league season.

County do double over Rush to enter promotion race

Thursday, July 21st, 2016

ross-durity-balbrigganCork County took a big step towards dragging themselves back into promotion contention in Leinster Division 2 following a 7 wicket victory over Rush at the Mardyke on Saturday, 16th July. In what proved to be an important weekend overall with some surprising results which could have a major bearing on the final standings at the end of the year.

The big surprise of the day was the win by bottom team North Kildare over Leinster, a result that really opens up the race for promotion. That result in addition to Cork County’s sees the Leesiders as the third team in likely contention for promotion back to Division 1.

Rush batted first and got off to a good start with an 86 run opening partnership between Stephen Doheny (56) and Lynal Jansen (37). But thereafter it became something of a procession and Rush were all out for 147. The turning point in the game came with the introduction into the attack of Stephan Grobler and Bilal Bhatti. In a spell of 9.4 overs Grobler emerged with the remarkable figures of 6-15, ably supported by Bilal (3-15). Cork did not have too much trouble chasing down the score which they did in the 27th over with Grobler (62) again in the runs.

Leinster Division 2:
Cork County 148-3 (Grobler 62, Bauer 33*) beat Rush 147 all out (Doheny 56, Jansen 37, Grobler 6-15, Bhatti 3-15) by 7 wickets at the Mardyke. scorecard

County win away at Balbriggan to make it 3 in a row

Tuesday, July 12th, 2016

Cork County 1st XI made it three wins from three in Leinster Division 2 following an impressive 49 run win on D/L away at high flying Balbriggan. Stephan Grobler and his side were coming into the match on the back of two comprehensive 9 wicket victories against North Kildare (H) and Terenure (A), respectively.

Following a slow start to the season, the return of Morne Bauer and Abubakar Saddique to the side has given a menacing look to the bowling attack with some top quality seam bowling from Bauer and Aaron Cawley in particular causing much of the damage against North Kildare and Terenure. However, on this occasion it was an impressive 138 run opening partnership between Ross Durity and Grobler put County in a commanding position to chase down the Balbriggan’s total of 257 before the rain came and put an end to proceedings.

The win at Balbriggan has left County in 4th position in Division 2 and in pursuit of both Leinster and Balbriggan in the two positions above them. Dublin University sit on top of the pile having completed their seven fixtures (receiving double points for each result) but are not permitted to be promoted so the chase for the final two promotion slots is really up for grabs following County’s upturn in form.

This season sees the introduction of a play-off match between the second last team in Division 1 and the second placed team in Division 2 to decide who goes up and who goes in the other direction. Next up for Cork County is an in-form Rush side at the Mardyke on Saturday (1 p.m.) with the north Dublin side coming off the back of a win a National Cup Quarter Final win against Balbriggan.

Positive start to the season for the 1st XI

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016

It was an extremely positive start to the 2016 competitive season for Cork County as they recorded victories in both Leinster and Munster competitions. A slightly weakened side that travelled up to Kenure to face Rush on Saturday, 30th April, came away with an invaluable 3 run victory thanks to a fine all round team display.

Bank holiday Monday, 2nd May, saw a relatively young Cork County side take on Midleton for a place in the Senior Shield decider against County Kerry. A great bowling display from ‪#‎CCCC‬ youngsters Brian Kelleher with his first senior 5 wicket haul and speedster Aaron Cawley with another 3 wickets saw County home by 7 runs.

Leinster Division 2

Cork County 256 all out (Grobler 59, Bilal 53, Conway 4-30) beat Rush 253 all out (Doheny 102, Grobler 4-37) by 3 runs at Milverton.  scorecard

Munster Senior Shield

Cork County 123 all out (Qassim 45, Grobler 23) beat Midleton 116 all out (B. Kelleher 5-14, A. Cawley 3-15) by 7 runs in another tight encounter at Midleton Town Park.

2016 Leinster Division 2 fixtures announced

Wednesday, January 20th, 2016

Cricket Leinster’s Open Competitions Committee has announced fixtures for both Division’s 1 and 2 for the upcoming 2016. Following their relegation from Division 1 last season, Cork County will be seeking to push hard for one of the top two positions.

For 2016, there will be a change to the promotion format with the champions automatically moving up to Division 1 while the second placed side will face a playoff against the club finishing second last in the top division.

Cork County face another tough start to their season with three away fixtures in succession against Rush, Dublin University and Leinster, respectively. Balbriggan commence with a trip to College Park, whilst Terenure go to Malahide, who get their second home game of the season.

Cork County will host Balbriggan in The Mardyke on Saturday 3rd September, and with Balbriggan tipped by many to have a good season, that match could well be instrumental in deciding the top of the league.
