County do double over Rush to enter promotion race

Thursday, July 21st, 2016

ross-durity-balbrigganCork County took a big step towards dragging themselves back into promotion contention in Leinster Division 2 following a 7 wicket victory over Rush at the Mardyke on Saturday, 16th July. In what proved to be an important weekend overall with some surprising results which could have a major bearing on the final standings at the end of the year.

The big surprise of the day was the win by bottom team North Kildare over Leinster, a result that really opens up the race for promotion. That result in addition to Cork County’s sees the Leesiders as the third team in likely contention for promotion back to Division 1.

Rush batted first and got off to a good start with an 86 run opening partnership between Stephen Doheny (56) and Lynal Jansen (37). But thereafter it became something of a procession and Rush were all out for 147. The turning point in the game came with the introduction into the attack of Stephan Grobler and Bilal Bhatti. In a spell of 9.4 overs Grobler emerged with the remarkable figures of 6-15, ably supported by Bilal (3-15). Cork did not have too much trouble chasing down the score which they did in the 27th over with Grobler (62) again in the runs.

Leinster Division 2:
Cork County 148-3 (Grobler 62, Bauer 33*) beat Rush 147 all out (Doheny 56, Jansen 37, Grobler 6-15, Bhatti 3-15) by 7 wickets at the Mardyke. scorecard

Positive start to the season for the 1st XI

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016

It was an extremely positive start to the 2016 competitive season for Cork County as they recorded victories in both Leinster and Munster competitions. A slightly weakened side that travelled up to Kenure to face Rush on Saturday, 30th April, came away with an invaluable 3 run victory thanks to a fine all round team display.

Bank holiday Monday, 2nd May, saw a relatively young Cork County side take on Midleton for a place in the Senior Shield decider against County Kerry. A great bowling display from ‪#‎CCCC‬ youngsters Brian Kelleher with his first senior 5 wicket haul and speedster Aaron Cawley with another 3 wickets saw County home by 7 runs.

Leinster Division 2

Cork County 256 all out (Grobler 59, Bilal 53, Conway 4-30) beat Rush 253 all out (Doheny 102, Grobler 4-37) by 3 runs at Milverton.  scorecard

Munster Senior Shield

Cork County 123 all out (Qassim 45, Grobler 23) beat Midleton 116 all out (B. Kelleher 5-14, A. Cawley 3-15) by 7 runs in another tight encounter at Midleton Town Park.

Weekend Review- 21st/22nd June

Monday, June 23rd, 2014

A mixed weekend for Cork County began in glorious sunshine in Dublin on Saturday when the 1st team travelled to Clontarf for the quarter-finals of the Leinster Senior Cup. An understrength County were asked to bat first and despite valiant efforts from Tim Clifford and Aidan Kelliher were bowled out for 124. Clontarf, who are closer to the top of the table than the bottom in Division 1 lost Mark Collier early but were able to push on and reach the victory target in just over 20 overs.

Sunday saw the 1st team return to LCU Division 2 league action, this time against Rush in Kenure. A dominant bowling display saw Rush reduced to 164 all out and the home side could not prevent County from securing a comprehensive 8 wicket win. This win ensures that County are now 40 points clear of third placed Leinster in the League table.

Sunday also saw the semi-final of the Munster Junior Cup in Farmers Cross. County were asked to bat first but lost wickets at regular intervals, Barry O’Sullivan(39) the only batsman that threatened the home side’s bowlers on a slow, low wicket. County were eventually bowled out for 101 in 28 overs. An early strike by Justin McGurk(1-18) saw ‘Quins reduced to 5-1 but a solid second wicket partnership brought the within 30 runs of victory. A triple strike by Kevin O’Sullivan(3-26) and a wicket for Chris Van Heerden gave some hope to the away side but a six off the last ball of the 23rd over ensured a five wicket victory for Harlequins.
